How to get Photoshop like Layer effects in GIMP 2.10, for free?
There are two options
- A plugin called layerfx.py
- A script called layerfx-Jon-Stipe-299.scm
If I understand correctly, the original author is Jonathan Stipe
I was not able to find the official source for above two options. But there's a reliable new one based on GEGL and available on GitHub for free
- GEGL Layer Effects by Linux Beaver

GIMP v 2.99 new dev build is expected to release this week. From what I see on social media, 3.0 is close.
-
It could be GIMP 2.10.34 too. Not sure which one. There is no announcement yet.
-
The stable branch of GIMP v2.10 got an update in the form of v 2.10.34. This release also allows you to pick colours from anywhere on the display. Works on both Windows and Linux ( X11 ).
With GIMP 2.10.34, you have better support for the following file format
there are new features backported to 2.10.34 from the development branch (v 2.99)
More features
QuoteTemplate selector in Canvas Size dialog
Item dockables with “Visibility” and “Link” headers
Improved desktop color-picking (Windows, X11)
Remembering color scale and model preferences -
Related to Photoshop PSD files, GIMP 2.10.34 now supports the ability to export PSD files with paths.
I would really love to see the support for smart objects added at some points.
-
I was hoping that they will release 3.0 soon than back-port everything to age old 2.10.
-
Yes, 3.0 please.
GIMP was very positive about it the last year. No noise about 3.0 these days. Who would want to use 2.10 for another year.
-
Not until June. I don't see any chat about it on social media.
They should really do something about 3.0. I got used to 2.10 though.
-
-
They have an active chat on Gnome GitLab. I hope to see this in action when 3.0 comes out.
-
I have a LayerFX plugin on 2.10. This one is for 3.0 mostly.
-
I saw the proposal. It is very much like the UI that Krita and Photoshop have.
People are pouring in their suggestions. Let us hope it will not derail the effort.
-
Happens all the time with open source. Suggestions are free and does not cost anything.

Nice find. Some of them are heavy though. Inpainting will help people remove objects from a picture. There is also a plugin based on removebg. It will help you remove the background from images. Works with 2.10.
-
RemoveBG can work standalone too. It is easier to use it.
I am thinking of installing GIMO 2.99.14 and try the GIMP ML plugin. Let us see what happens.
-
GIMP 2.99.16 is getting ready for release. Expect soon
-
There is a good chance that you will see GIMP 3.0.0 RC1 soon.
Or GIMP 2.99.18 at the least
