Has anyone here ever tried out the Vanilla forum software? It was the first modern forum platform I remember seeing back in the early 10's, but I never actually joined a forum that used this software before. I've never tried it out either, since I wasn't really a fan of the layout. I've only ever seen people use Flarum as well as Discourse when it comes to modern forum software. Would you ever give this software a test?

I used to have a few forums running them. I stopped using them after a SaaS bought them. The open-source version is not grabbing the attention it as used to be. I really thought someone would fork it, nothing of that sort either.
-
The open source version is still there. I saw a release some 2-3 months back old. But the support and overall enthusiasm is not high as it used to be on the open section.
-
My personal opinion. It is unsafe as a free software at the moment. Not sure what the roadmap is.

There is an update by Open Vanilla forums admin Linc. He says it is unlikely we see another build of open source Vanilla.
-
Yep, the post says no official update since May 2021.

I do not see any reliable fork as well for open source Vanilla forums.
-
That is natural. We received free forums have already moved to stagnant mode years ago. Who is going to fork a forum that might have complications with the new owner.
-
I really thought there would be at least one open source release after Higher Logic acquired Vanilla.
-
Looks like Vanilla is dead from the moment of acquisition. No contribution at all from the new owners.
@Linc also said somewhere in that forum that third party plugins also died away.
-
To be honest, a lot of people disliked their UI.
-
Vanilla had a conventional UI option too. If I remember correctly, they had at least 3 layout options for the home page.
-
There is no point talking about it anymore. The project got only one community release and they say it is not audited.
-
No forks is a big bad news.
-
Maybe forums are gone for good.
With Discord and social media taking all the people, there is little room for forums.
-
I don't believe that. Discourse, Xenforo, Woltlab, Invision etc have a lot of users who pay a fortune for their software.
-
Nice that it is gone. Not a big fan. The community was helpful though.
What do you expect? Buying a software and giving it away for free? Saints are rare these days.
-
I really thought someone would fork it.
I agree, I never trusted they would give free versions infinitely.
