Did you know that GIMP supports using custom patterns? You can use PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP and TIFF files as patterns inside GIMP.
The proper method is however using a .pat file generated by GIMP. GIMP also supports using .pat files created by Adobe tools (to some extent).
To add a new pattern to GIMP, create a .pat file and place it inside the config folder of GIMP.
config > GIMP > 2.10 > patterns is where I store mine
You can also go to Edit > Preferences > Folders > Patterns and decide which folder holds the custom patterns.

Saw a screenshot of build 2.99.17 on X. They are planning options to choose on the startup screen, like Inkscape.
Release date of GIMP 3.0 is expected to be around May - June 2024.
GIMP 3.0 enters the feature freeze phase.
They are still giving some time for layer effects though. It is being handled by @CMYKStudent. Let us hope it makes it to GIMP 3.0 .

Need to create a .ggr file from an image? Use
G'MIC Gradient[from Line]
The path is Filters > G'MIC-Qt > in the search box, search for G'MIC Gradient[from Line]
.ggr is the short form of GIMP Gradient. You can also use a .ggr file inside Inkscape.

That's the latest I heard.
If you are a Linux / Ubuntu user and your .py plugins are not working, even though they are in the right folder, make sure " Allow Executing File as Program " is ticked. Otherwise, it will not show up inside Filters > GIMP Fu
