MyBB is a very popular free forum software that's been in development since 2002. Many forum enthusiasts will say it's the best free forum software on the net, and I remember seeing quite a few different communities using MyBB. However lately I haven't really seen too many people using this software for their sites. I'll see more people using other free alternatives, but I've been seeing more and more communities using paid software as of late. If you ever used MyBB, how do you like it? It's never really been one of my favorites, I find SMF to be a better free software.

MyBB is still good. A bit old, but good. The main issue is the lack of a maintained responsive theme.
If you can get a responsive theme, that is always helpful. MyBB offers timely security updates and has many useful plugins.

I remember when I first started creating forums and building them up, I started out with phpBB, and when I wasn't keen on that forum software due to how you would need to install mods and needing to add code which if you did it wrong, it would mess the whole site up I ended up looking for alternatives.
MyBB was the first one I came across and I really liked how it looked and how easy the admin panel was. I later moved to vBulletin and Xenforo and the MyBB admin panel and how things worked always reminded me of vBulletin or Xenforo and it was free.
I understand that now it's a lot different and I myself do not see as many MyBB forums around now.

I still see a lot of MyBB forums. There are not many good forum options these days. Every now and then someone tries to start a forum and the budget is not good enough for big names. They end up choosing phpBB or MyBB.
I am not saying that free forums are bad. Sadly, feature-wise they need to do a lot to compete with their paid sector competitors.

I love that MyBB is still actively supplying patches. The only thing that holds them back is the theme.

Yes, true. They would be in an even better position if there was a reliable theme house. It is mostly freelancers supporting the ecosystem now.

MyBB got 4 new responsive themes.
1. A theme based on the planned MyBB 1.9 theme
2. Curves UX theme - which looks cool
3. Inspired theme - Based on Bootstrap
4. Inspired Dark

I tried the 1.9 Concept theme. It's cool.
If it gets maintained well, MyBB got above it's biggest defect, the lack of a responsive theme.

I am currently running a forum powered by MyBB with a custom theme. I am so addicted to MyBB in terms of free one.

There are talks on the official MyBB forum about 1.9. There is still no beta, but looks like it is not dead after all.
-
MyBB 1.9 will be released. When, that is something we do not know.
