Free Forum Software

My forum is Proboards. They do their own hosting as well so I haven't had to find my own.

I'd like it where members could be moved over without having to rejoin. Maybe reset a password but not to go through the entire process again. I'll keep checking on PB. I hate asking Support questions though. They sometimes forget there are those of us who are NOT technically inclined

I have used Discourse and phpBB in the past. Both of them are very good. Although, I'm no longer using free forum software but those two are what I can recommend.

I have forums on phpbb, mybb, and smf. These are some of the most popular free forum software and all of my forums ar eon shared hosting. Since my forums are small (with few members and small traffic), I have never experienced any problems.

I started out with working on phpbb and it's actually very good and easy to use. I can say that it's user friendly. I have just 2 forums set up with the free forum software. I'm planning to set up a third one soon.

I like phpbb. Loads of extensions, themes etc. A lot of different ways to customize your forum

I have in the past used free forum software such as SMF, Phpbb, and also MyBB and out of all those, I have always found MyBB to be the better option when it comes to the free forum software. I feel because I am also a huge fan of Xenforo and I was also a fan of vBulletin before they moved to vBulletin 4, MyBB is like a free version of those with many of the functions being very similar. If I am ever unable to use paid software, MyBB is always my go-to.

Free forum software as we know is done. Unless some magic happens , we do not get a shared hosting worthy free software anytime soon.

That has been the trend since last few years.

It's Mybb for me.
Sure the initial default design and features are not enough but there are many plugins and themes available for you and you can customize them as you please. Also, I liked the feature of average statistics in Mybb. It will give you an overview of your forum

It is sad to see that free forum hosting is somewhat falling off to be honest. A lot of the reason forums are still as popular as they are at the moment despite social media is because of free forum hosting, it gives people who do not have a lot of money to invest a chance to start up their own forum without worrying about the cost of it all.
