Remember Atom, the favourite coding tool from the founder of GitHub? They are the same people who built Electron, which made creation of cross platform desktop apps easy.

They are now back! With a lightning fast Text Edit called Zed.

This is excellent news!

I really loved the way Atom Editor aced in its category. It was sad that Atom Editor got lost in time. There was promise to a keep it alive, which was never honoured.

VS Code is filling that gap, right? There is also AI integration now. What is wrong in Atom being forgotten?

Atom was too much of everyone's favourite at that time. To be exact when GitHub was an independent entity.

It really deserved a long life for it served a lot of people without greed or lack of features. It had it's space among coders, GitHub lovers and other people who need an advanced code editor which is not heavy.

Atom was a part of GitHub. I believe the trademark and licence terms would favour the owner of GitHub in many ways.

It makes perfectly sense to create a completely independent code editor even though it comes from the makers of Atom.

I do not use a Mac. So can't say how good it is.

Personally, I prefer code editors which works on Linux or Windows.

I would love to see the Web version they are planning. There was a platform independent web editor from some popular brand. I do not remember the name now.

Even Photoshop is planning offer a web version. In fact, they have one with limited features.

A code editor with Windows version is not going to win a lot of coder fan applause. I do not believe that every coder is a Mac user. It is otherwise actually. If you create them for Windows, you get more and more adopters.

They are calling it VS Code killer. Perhaps it is faster than most existing alternatives.

I don't think VS Code needs any killing. But Zed editor is definitely a good alternative from what I see

I am with you on that one. It is good to have options.

What if VS Code goes to pay wall mode one day? Things like that are best defended if there is a good alternative around.

Checked the Zed editor after a long gap. I was hoping to find a Linux or Windows build. There were none, only macOS builds were there. The last build was 3 days old. There are issue tracking for Windows and Linux on GitHub. There you can see how much is covered and how much is left. I checked Linux, people were already divided between Flatpak, AppImage and others

The Zed maintainer for the Linux build was open about it. They there will be no binary for Linux.

Zed is now available on Linux. It is the first stable release of Zed for Linux.

The website says the following command will install Zed on most Linux distributions.
