I am completely ok with buying a premium theme. But I quite happy with the default home page we have here. With Xenforo using a category listing, this one is new to many people. There is a fresh feeling compared to the age old category listing.
I had tried dabbling in making themes but it’s not for me. Fortunately, my forum is on Proboards & we have a Library we can use to download themes that other members have created. Or you may be fortunate to have somebody willing to do a theme for you. I wouldn't pay for one, not unless I absolutely had to. I feel other plug-ins would be more beneficial if I were on a Paid platform.

This is something I noticed myself, the free themes always look like the default with color and if you are looking for something a little different and unique, premium may be the only way to go. I am always willing to go for premium if I feel it would help the forum and would be a good investment.
If it is something like phpBB, I would definitely buy a premium theme. For options like Flarum, Woltlab, Xenforo etc there are decent options. I do not dislike their default themes. A bit of customisation and they are cool.
Bought before and will do it again. Some themes are really good with added features. They contribute to SEO as well through clean code.

This is true, if you can find a theme that is clean and ideal for your forum then it works well and would be a great investment to the forum. I bought a premium theme myself for a forum I opened a few months ago after kind donations to help and it was the best thing I did.

I am thinking of creating a good-looking phpBB theme for a project I am planning. phpBB has a lot of potential but lacks a good theme.

This is good to know. I have been working with WordPress for a few years now and I will admit, some of the free themes are good but the premium themes offer so much more.
I am definitely considering getting a premium theme for my blog when I can as I feel it would not only look better but it would also be better for my site in the long run and a great investment.
I am very tempted to try a new theme for Woltlab Suite Forum. I have a few ideas I want to try.

Frankly, speaking, I have never bought a premium theme for my forums. In fact, I have not even bought premium forum software. I have always used open-source software and always used free themes. I have never felt any necessity to buy premium themes

Premium themes are premium for a reason. You are definitely going to get quality for money spent. They have that support too should you be in need for any of their help too.
